Lost weight fast on purpose and now have intermittent right-sided pain after meals. Booked for imaging, and in the meantime trying to understand the mechanism.

Symptoms worth knowing: right upper-quadrant pain after fatty meals, radiating to the right shoulder blade, often at night. That combination warrants imaging rather than a forum thread.

What would genuinely help is knowing how much of the gallbladder signal is the drug and how much is simply the rate of weight loss, because the answer changes what you can do about it.

Happy to be told the question itself is wrong.

Gallbladder warning for gallbladder risk: rapid weight loss increases gallstone risk regardless of method. GLP-1 patients have a ~2-3% incidence of gallbladder events in clinical trials.

Symptoms to watch for: pain in upper right abdomen after fatty meals, nausea after eating, pain radiating to right shoulder. I had my gallbladder out at month 6 — it was full of stones. My surgeon said it's very common in significant weight loss patients.

Gallbladder ultrasound monitoring on gallbladder risk: given the known gallstone risk with rapid weight loss, my doctor orders gallbladder ultrasound every 6 months:

Baseline: normal, no stones or sludge
Month 6: small amount of biliary sludge, no stones
Month 12: sludge resolved, gallbladder normal

Ursodeoxycholic acid (Ursodiol) 300mg BID was prescribed prophylactically from the start. This reduces gallstone formation during rapid weight loss by ~60% per the available data. Ask your doctor about prophylactic ursodiol if you're losing weight rapidly.

Mine went the same way, slower. The detail I would add is minor and it is already implied above.

Adding the clinical framing, because it changes how the question reads. The useful move here is to separate what is established from what is widely repeated. Those two sets overlap less than the confident tone of most write-ups suggests, and the second set is where nearly all the disagreement on this board comes from.
